LANDMARK RENDITIONS

Landmark Renditions

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create a Landmark Rendition using techniques learned in class
  • Use texture (stone, straw, cement), form (two dimensional, three dimensional), and space (foreground middle ground, background) to replicate World Famous Monuments
  • Use geographic connections (cultural identity, countries/continents, manmade structures) and design principles (proportion, unity, movement) relating to Public Art
  • Define Landmarks (building or place of historical, aesthetic, or cultural importance used to mark and important stage or turning point in time)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. To Those Who Made The Supreme Sacrifice. Bellows Falls, Vermont (1971) Lee Friedlander
2. Read Monuments Help Us Remember by Lee Sullivan Hill
3. Discussion Questions "What is a landmark? What interesting facts do you know about each landmark? Are there other stories with historical significance? How do you know this information? What is the tallest building in the world? Besides Egypt, where were pyramids built? Why do houses look so different in different parts of the world? How long did it take to build these huge buildings and monuments? What is the oldest manmade structure in the world?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use recognizable geometric shapes (rectangle, circle, triangle) to outline world landmark
2. Use black sharpie markers to trace over geometric shapes of landmark renditions
3. Use rubber erasers to remove any pencil lines behind the thick black lines

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Landmark Rendition for Assigned Table
2. Lego Landmarks- 35 Monumental Sculptures
3. National Geographic Suitcase Portfolios & Passports

Lesson Activities

1. Use watercolor techniques to fill in the positive space (building, monument, landmark)
2. Use watercolor techniques to fill in the negative space (sky, clouds, trees, background)
3. Add decorative details (columns, towers, domes) to Landmark Renditions

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Landmark Rendition for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (rulers, pencils, erasers)

Lesson Activities 

1. Outline decorative details (columns, towers, domes) with Permanent Black Marker
2. Outline patterns (stripes, spirals, meanders) with metallic sharpie markers
3. Cut Out & Add a ornate frame to Famous Landmark Renditions
