THE HEXAGON PROJECT

The Hexagon Project

Learning Targets:

I can...
  • Create a collaborative installation using assemblage techniques learning class
  • Use value (hue, tint), space (positive, negative), and shape (geometric, organic) to make a hexagon design
  • Use design principles (composition, contrast, variety) and mathematical connections (equilateral triangle, euclidean geometry, congruent angles) relating to 2019 Special Theme Transforming Conflict Hexagon Project
  • Define Installation (act of art being installed in a space open to all people in the community)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Consuelo Underworld (2013) One Nation Underground
2. Charity White (2016) Prescriptive Series
3. Brian Reynolds (2017) Gregory Kloehn Multi-Species Triplex
4. Reflection Questions "What are you passionate about? What is your message? What special tools or materials do you need to be successful? What did you learn from this collaboration? How did our approach match our intended audience experience of the work? What is our exhibition narrative? Does our work successfully communicate that narrative to viewers visually? How can you make a change for the better? What do you care about? What would you like to change in the world?"

Lesson Activities:

1. Choose a 3" by 3" Cardboard Hexagon Box
2. Separate the cardboard hexagon box using a line (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) into two parts
3. Draw Three Preliminary Sketches of Hexagon Design

Reminder:
  • Initials & Home Teacher on Back of Paper

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve 3" by 3" Cardboard Hexagon Box
2. International Interdependence Project IV (2018) Scraton
3. Installation- is the act of art being installed in a space open to all people in the community. How large do you think our installation will be? What are some ways we can make our collaborative piece look like an original work of art? What do you like and design like about these hexagon designs? What would like make these hexagon designs better?"

Lesson Activities:

1. Choose Best Hexagon Design out of Three Preliminary Sketches
2. Use graphite pencil to lightly transfer hexagon design onto cardboard hexagon box
3. Outline final pencil drawing three times before painting cardboard hexagon box

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Cardboard Hexagon Box from assigned self
2. Set Up Studio Area (paint brushes, water bucket, watercolor)

Lesson Activities:

1. Outline pencil drawing three times before painting Cardboard Hexagon Box
2. Use value (hue, tint, color) to color Cardboard Hexagon Box
3. Use clear varnish to cover cardboard hexagon box in a clear, protective coat
