 Close Up Animals

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Close Up Animal using collage techniques learn in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric organic free form) and texture (thick thin smooth rough) inspired by Hyper Realistic Painter (1964-Present) Ester Curini
  • Use drawing techniques (contour continuous outline) and design principles (composition proportion balance) based on Realism
  • Define Enlarge (process of increasing or magnifying the size of an image)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Cat Of Many Names (2018) Ester Curini

2. Read Eye To Eye: How Animals See The World by Caldecott Honor Winner Steve Jenkins

3. Discussion Questions "What are some animals found in nature? Do these animals have special meaning? What is emphasis? What designs do you see? Which colors are found? What makes skin look like it has bumps compared to looking smooth? Are the patterns even or do they vary? Which parts are the texture and which parts are behind the texture? What animal is this? Which animal does this close up belong to? Do you know what human fingers and giraffe fur have in common? Which carnivorous canine coat changes color with the seasons? What are some of the main purpose for thick coats? Can you guess the name of the herbivorous animal that this coat belongs to? What do you see here? Can you guess the animal shown here? What is shown in this picture?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use pencil to draw shape variation (geometric organic) of animal parts (fin wings legs) of animal drawings

2. Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to add facial features (horns tusks hair) of animal drawings

3.Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to add details (patterns, texture, gloss) to Close Up Animals

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Close Up Animals for Assigned Table

2. Trixie (2011) Ester Curini

3. Discussion Questions "Where does your animal live? What is your animal called? What does your animal eat? What three characteristics would you use to describe how your animal looks? What is the name of the animal used? What biome does your animal live in? What kinds of plants would be in your biome? How did you combine different animal parts to create animal? Did you show values by having pressure of the pencil by showing highlights and shows with complimentary colors? Did you create a center of interest within the eyes by adding a white reflection? What do you notice about the background? What are three similar characteristics in each picture? Why do you think the artist has created this style? How does this picture make you feel? What would you think the artist is trying to make you feel?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use color combinations (analogous secondary primary) to fill in the positive space (animal) of the animal drawings

2. Use color combinations (analogous secondary primary) to fill in the negative space (background) of the animal drawings

3. Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to fill in the positive space (animal) for Close Up Animals

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Close Up Animals for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (colored pencil, chalk, erasers)

Lesson Activities

1.  Add highlights (light source, reflective light) to positive space (animal) of animal drawings
