Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Korean Street (2021) Tahni Osterman
2. Read Children's Favorite Stories: Fables, Myths, and Fairytales by Kim So-Un
3. Discussion Questions "What is a Hanok? Why are floors in Traditional Korean Hanok Houses yellow? Where can visitors start in a Joseon Hanok Village? What are the main charms of Hanok houses? What is the meaning behind Hanok houses? What makes Hanok a traditional Korean style of architecture? What is the different shapes in different parts of Korea? Where is the Gyeongbokgung Palace located? What do you think about this architecture? What art elements and design principles were used to make this architecture?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use three dimensional shapes (rectangle, square, triangle) to create a three dimensional silhouette house
2. Add house details (porch, roof, pillars) to the roof, levels, and foundation of the silhouette house
3. Outline silhouette house with a neutral color (black, brown, grey) colored pencil, ink pen, or sharpie marker
Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Folded Hanok for Assigned Table
2. Blue Hanok (2021) Tahni Osterman
3. Discussion Questions "What do you see in this picture? What do you see in this house? What do you think Thani Osterman meant when creating this artwork? Does your picture have space or distance? Does your picture have a horizon line, one point perspective, or background? How can we create the illusion of depth within our own Folded Hanok? What do you think this artwork represents? Why are you drawn to this subject? What do you think was the most important artist tool when creating this work? What connections did the artist have to this work? Does this artwork represent something about the artist?"
Lesson Activities
1. Add finishing details (porch, roof, pillars) to the roof, levels, and foundation of the Folded Hanok
2. Finish outlining the house silhouette with colored pencil, ink pen, or sharpie marker for hanok house
3. Add motifs (tiny windows, lanterns, trees) to mimic landscapes for the Folded Hanok
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Folded Hanok for the Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (water bucket, paintbrushes, watercolor)
Lesson Activities
1. Finish adding motifs (hidden faces, tiny windows, colorful spirals) to mimic architecture for the Folded Hanok
2. Add color (monochromatic, analogous) to the silhouette of the house of the Folded Hanok
3. Add value (highlights, shadows) to the positive space (house) of the Folded Hanok
