PULP PAPER PAINTINGS

 Pulp Paper Paintings

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Pulp Paper Paintings using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric organic), and value (lightness darkness) inspired by Korean Artist (2010-Present) Jiyoung Chung
  • Use paper making techniques (press, wire, dilute, wind) and design principles (gradation movement contrast) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Joomchi (paper making technique that uses water to seal several layers of thin, handmade mulberry papers together to form a single image)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Whisper Romance- Contented (2013) Jiyoung Chung

2. Read Joomchi & Beyond by Jiyoung Chung

3. Discussion Questions "How much paper is recycled? Is the digital revolution making paper obsolete? What kind of innovation is happening in the paper industry? Which one of the following in not a method for making paper pulp? What is the term for transferring wet paper onto a flat surface with an absorbent material when making paper by hand? Is tree-free paper more expensive than regular paper? How is paper eco-friendly? Can paper be made without trees? What surfaces in history have people written on? Who used papyrus for writing? What is a parchment and vellum? How is parchment and velum used?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 12" Chipboard

2. Draw foreground (two waves), middle ground (main wave), and background (horizon line) of textured sculptures

3. Mix paper pulp three times before adding layers to chipboard of Pulp Paper Paintings

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Pulp Paper Paintings for Assigned Tables

2. Whisper-Romance: Light (2012) Jiyoung Chung 

3. Discussion Questions "What is going on in this artwork? what do you see that makes you say that? What emotions do you feel when looking art this artwork? What emotions do you think the artist was feeling? What are the lines and colors in this artwork? How do colors and lines contribute to the emotion? What types of things are people doing? What do these artworks have in common? How could you tell that these were created by this artist? Is there movement in either of these paintings? Is there good balance in these paintings? What title would you give these paintings?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add thin layer of paper pulp to forefront wave (heaviest), middle wave (middle layer), and slanted (lightest) of textured sculpture

2. Use paper pulp to add details (wave peaks, jagged lines, wooden boats) to textured sculptures 

3. Use modeling tools to add texture (ridges, curves, relief) to Pulp Paper Paintings

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Pulp Paper Paintings for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (modeling compound, white opaque flakes, tempera paint)

Lesson Activities

1. Use monochromatic colors (light blue, dark blue) to fill in the positive space (waves) of textured sculptures

2. Use monochromatic colors (light orange, dark orange) to fill in negative space (clouds, mountain, background) of textured sculpture

3. Use tint (white) and shade (black) to add depth within the Pulp Paper Paintings
