CONSTRUCTION SITE COLLAGES

 Construction Site Collages

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Construction Site Collage using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), form (two dimensional, three dimensional), and texture (implied, actual, visual) inspired by American Artist (1959-Present) Gwyneth Leech
  • Use painting techniques (layering, blending, splatter painting) and design principles (balance, composition, repetition) based on American Art
  • Define Emphasis (creating a centered interest in an artwork using color, contrast, and lines)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

2. Read Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site

3. Discussion Questions "What do you see at this construction site? What do you think the hammer is used for? What was the best thing about today? What do you think about construction sites? What are you looking forward to tomorrow? How many different tools can you name? What construction machines can you name? What types of things do construction workers make? Which construction vehicles do you like best? Which would you ouse to build your house: straw, sticks, or bricks?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper

2. Use geometric shapes (triangles, circles, rectangles) to draw the exterior (outside) of the construction collages

3. Use geometric shapes (triangles, circles, rectangles) to draw the main parts (wheels, cab, headlights) of the Construction Site Collages

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Construction Site Collages for Assigned Tables

3. Discussion Questions "If you need to dig deep into he ground to further till the soil, what would you use? How are construction vehicles designed? When did the first major construction vehicle hit the market? What is the primary purpose of construction equipment? What are some benefits to a diesel engine in construction vehicles? What is the proper name for the pull equipment attaches? What is used to attach equipment to construction vehicles?" 

Lesson Activities 

1. Use line types (contour, outline, continuous) to outline neutral colors (black, grey, brown) the construction collages

2. Add decorative patterns (dots, stripes, swirls) to the positive space (construction vehicles) of the construction collages

3. Add lines types (contour, outline, continuous) to the negative space (background) of the construction collages

Day Three, Art Start 

1. Retrieve Construction Site Collages for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (construction paper, glue sticks, oil pastels)

Lesson Activities

1. Use warm colors (red orange yellow) to fill in the positive space (construction vehicles) of the construction collages 

2. Use cool colors (blue green, purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the construction collages

3. Add highlights (lightness, darkness) to the positive space (construction vehicles) of the Construction Site Collages
