Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Jenny Murphy Heart Design using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic), warm/cool colors (red, orange, yellow; green, blue, purple), and line types (diagonal, vertical, horizontal) inspired by British Illustrator (1935-Present) Jenny Murphy
  • Use artistic environments (pattern layering, woven leather curtains, crazy quilts, music sheets) and design principles (balance, movement, gradation) based on Midwest Art
  • Define Symbol (a material object representing or standing for something abstract)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Sparkly Love (2016) Jenny Murphy
2. Read The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond
3. Discussion Questions "What pieces were you most drawn to? Why were you drawn to these pieces? What are some elements that tie the artist' pieces together (bold colors, big shapes, simple patterns, black outlines)? What would you change if you were the artist? What do you feel the artist is trying to accomplish with this piece? What types of media does the artist use? What, if anything, do the pieces remind you of? What about this artwork is something you have seen or experienced before?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 9" X 9" Painting Paper
2. Use template to trace a geometric shape (heart) in the center of the painting paper
3. Use black sharpie marker to outline various lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) of Jenny Murphy Heart Designs

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Jenny Murphy Heart Designs for Assigned Table
2. Infinite Love (2016) Jenny Murphy
3. Discussion Questions "What was your first reaction to this artwork? Does your opinion about the artwork change the longer you look at it? What types of lines are in this artwork? What types of colors are used in this artwork? Which area of the artwork is emphasized by the artist? How did this artist use space? How did this artist use balance? How did this artist use proportion? How would you describe this artwork to someone who has never seen it? What elements of this painting seem real? What is excited about this artwork? What is missing from this artwork? How do you think this artwork was made?"

1. Use black oil pastel to outline various lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) of Jenny Murphy Heart Designs
2. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to fill in the positive space (heart) of the Jenny Murphy Heart Designs
3. Use cool colors (blue, green, purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the Jenny Murphy Heart Designs

2. Set Up Studio Area (tempera paint, water bucket, paint brushes)
